The Installments
A portrait in negative: face and folded hands reversed into radiograph, framed like a specimen.
A winged red emblem floats on sky blue, a pop relic spotted with something like blood.
In near-darkness a bearded man bends to his hands, working a small brightness between them.
An open palm offered to the lens beside a door — the hand as document, lifeline first.
A projector’s beam blows the frame to white while its operator stands in the surviving dark.
Two men sit for a warm outdoor portrait, side by side and elsewhere in thought.
In an attic a man looks up into the skylight’s glow, auditioning for an annunciation.
Inside a bordered screen, archival dancers grapple and dip — borrowed bodies wearing out their film.
A young man extends his arm toward the machine, adjusting the very image that holds him.
Synopsis
is the distillation and, in some ways the culmination, of Rouzbeh Rashidi’s experimental film practice. Initiated in 2011, it is an ongoing series of films that provides a ‘laboratory’ for experimenting with cinematic forms. It encompasses everything from brief ‘sketches’ to fully-fledged feature films. A ‘notebook’ – sometimes an oblique ‘diary’ – HSP radically challenges the traditional mode of filmmaking, where a single film produced over a long period of time is the outcome. It fully explores the potential of filmmaking as an integral and ongoing part of daily life, as enabled by today’s digital technology. The project has created many different experiences for Rouzbeh Rashidi as a filmmaker. Rouzbeh Rashidi has collaborated with a large selection of artists from all over the world.
