The Installments
A woman’s smile survives its own inversion, printed in the cool silver of a negative.
Through a burning keyhole, a figure stands at the door of a sunset that may not admit him.
An eye watches from a frame inside a frame inside the sky — surveillance arranged like an altarpiece.
The landscape turns on its side: yellow field, treeline, and sky filed vertically, gravity on holiday.
A hospital bed and its patient dissolve to white beside the machine that keeps the count.
In a rust-red yard a capped man sits against the wall, serving a sentence made of afternoon.
Concentric rings close around a green window where small shapes graze, the image taking aim at itself.
A head in headphones shreds into rainbow scanlines, biting down on the signal.
Wedding tape: a stern patriarch and a jewelled bride, the ceremony crystallising in video noise.
Two children in the warm fog of family tape, the older steadying the younger for the camera.
Synopsis
is the distillation and, in some ways the culmination, of Rouzbeh Rashidi’s experimental film practice. Initiated in 2011, it is an ongoing series of films that provides a ‘laboratory’ for experimenting with cinematic forms. It encompasses everything from brief ‘sketches’ to fully-fledged feature films. A ‘notebook’ – sometimes an oblique ‘diary’ – HSP radically challenges the traditional mode of filmmaking, where a single film produced over a long period of time is the outcome. It fully explores the potential of filmmaking as an integral and ongoing part of daily life, as enabled by today’s digital technology. The project has created many different experiences for Rouzbeh Rashidi as a filmmaker. Rouzbeh Rashidi has collaborated with a large selection of artists from all over the world.
